How to Stop Apps from Running at Startup

Too many apps launching at startup slows your boot time and wastes system resources. This guide shows you how to find and disable them on Windows and common app settings.
1. Disable startup apps in Task Manager
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then click the Startup apps tab. You will see every program set to launch at login along with its impact rating (Low, Medium, High). Right-click any entry you do not need immediately after boot and choose Disable. The program is not uninstalled — it just will not start automatically.
2. Manage startup apps in Windows Settings
Go to Settings → Apps → Startup. This shows the same list as Task Manager but with toggle switches. Some apps only appear here and not in Task Manager, so check both places. Disable anything you do not need running in the background from the moment you log in.
3. Turn off auto-start inside the app itself
Many apps — Spotify, Discord, Zoom, Teams, Steam — have their own "Launch at startup" or "Start with Windows" setting buried in their preferences. Disabling it inside the app is more reliable than Task Manager for these programs because the app may re-enable itself through its own updater if you only disable it externally.
4. Measure your boot time improvement
After disabling startup apps, restart your PC and note how much faster the desktop becomes usable. Task Manager → Performance → CPU shows a "Up time" counter. Removing high-impact startup programs can cut boot time from over a minute to under 30 seconds on many machines.
5. What is safe to disable — and what to keep
Safe to disable: Spotify, Discord, Teams (personal use), Steam, Adobe updaters, OneDrive (if you do not use it), Skype. Keep enabled: your antivirus or security software, any hardware drivers for peripherals you use (audio, GPU software), and Windows security components. When in doubt, search the process name online before disabling it.
Frequently asked questions
If I disable a startup app, can I still use it?
Yes. Disabling a startup app only prevents it from launching automatically with Windows. You can still open it manually at any time from the Start menu or desktop. The program is not removed or uninstalled.
Will disabling startup apps make Windows faster?
It improves boot time and reduces the time before the PC feels responsive after login. The effect depends on which apps you disable — High impact items make the biggest difference. Normal performance while you are actively using the PC is mostly unaffected.
An app I disabled keeps re-enabling itself. Why?
Some apps re-enable their startup entry through their own updater or background service. The fix is to turn off the launch-at-startup option inside the app's own settings rather than only through Task Manager.
